I was selected as the first outsider to present to a large global energy company's worldwide experience team at their monthly Lunch and Learn session. My presentation was an adaptation of the Deceptive Design course that I developed and teach at Harrisburg University in their Human Centered Interaction Design master's program.
The EU has taken the lead on creating legislation against the use of Deceptive Patterns. In the US, there have been multiple lawsuits in dfferent states and the FTC has recently taken on Amazon.
It is critical for companies to understand what Deceptive Patterns are in order to stay ahead of expensive negative consequences. Persuasive design techniques can be used ethically if done correctly and it is an important distinction, the line between Deceptive and Persuasive.
